New smart meters offer huge benefits with regards to enabling better monitoring and control of gas and electricity usage and will soon be rolled out to all households.
Smart meters bring accurate bills at no additional cost. The amount of gas and electricity that’s been used is shown in pounds and pence and in near real time – enabling consumers to know exactly how much their next bill will be and make informed choices about their energy use. Smart meters will help the UK and the South move towards a low-carbon economy, by minimising energy waste, whilst at the same time giving consumers more control.
With more than 3.5 million smart meters already installed across Britain, I am looking forward to seeing this new technology upgrade more homes across Fareham. More than 8/10 people with a smart meter would recommend it to a friend, and nearly 79% are confident that their bills are accurate, whereas only 59% of those without feel the same.
Smart meters will give us all much more control of what we spend on gas and electricity, and finally put an end to estimated bills. I was delighted to see first-hand how smart meters will benefit my constituents. I encourage everyone to visit Smart Energy GB’s website or visit their local Post Office branch to pick up a leaflet to find out more about smart meters.
The out-dated system of manual meter readings and estimation and the inconvenient prepayment system will be completely revolutionised for the 1,500 constituents currently using these meters. By 2020 every home in Britain will be offered a smart meter at no additional cost.
