Fareham MP Suella Braverman has welcomed government plans which could see the Hampshire Police force benefitting from a £25m funding boost in the next financial year.
A new police funding settlement, which would see funding in England and Wales increase by £970 million in 2019/20, was approved by MPs in the House of Commons on Monday. Under the settlement brought forward by the Home Office, the Hampshire Constabulary will see a £25m (8%) funding increase.
The news comes just a few days after Alex Charge, Chairman of Hampshire Police Federation, called on the Government to increase funding for local policing following an increase in violent crime in England and Wales last year.
Addressing calls for greater assistance to be given to front line police officers, Suella Braverman also welcomed an additional £175 million going into the Police Transformation Fund, which includes investment for innovative new crime prevention techniques and a new national welfare service for front line officers.
Commenting, Suella Braverman said:
“I’m very pleased that MPs have approved the new police funding settlement which will boost funding in Hampshire by £25m in 2019/20. I will continue to work with the Government to ensure that our forces in Fareham and Hampshire get the resources they need in order to tackle local issues, and this additional £25 million will help to do that.
“We know the demands that the police are facing as the nature of crime changes and becomes more complex, so I also welcome the additional £495 million investment into technology capabilities and greater pledges from the Home Office to tackle economic crime and drug trafficking.”
