I am inviting the people of Fareham with an interest in improving safety of cyclists and pedestrians to provide evidence, drawing on experience from the UK or other countries that can be used to shape future policy decisions.
While the UK has some of the safest roads in the world, the Government is looking at ways to make them safer and that is why the Transport Minister Jesse Norman announced the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy Safety Review into cycle safety.
The Government is seeking the widest possible responses to help recast its approach to road safety, so more people can be encouraged to walk and cycle.
The consultation can be accessed here: www.gov.uk/government/consultations/cycling-and-walking-investment-strategy-cwis-safety-review
I believe strongly in encouraging more people to walk and cycle, with all the proven benefits to community life, air quality and mental and physical well-being. But people need to be confident that they will be safe, which is why I welcome this review. I would like to invite people in Fareham to contribute to this call for evidence and help to make our roads safer.
Another stage of the review will focus on whether a new offence equivalent to causing death or serious injury by careless or dangerous driving should be introduced for cyclists, after an independent report has found there is a case for changing the law to help tackle dangerous and careless cycling.
