The first event launching Fareham Under 35s Conservatives was a success, marking an exciting start to engaging younger people in politics.
I was really struck by the local interest amongst the Under 35s in politics and was pleased that our first event, a Pub Quiz, was well attended. I am sure this marks the beginning of a series of events that we will be holding to explore the political, campaigning and social issues affecting young people. Politics affects everyone and younger people have a lot to contribute in terms of ideas, energy and skills. There are lots of opportunities to learn more about society, feed in ideas to change policy and find solutions to the challenges we face, and campaign on important causes. I urge people to join us and get in touch with me if they are interested.
Our next event is “Drinks and Debate”, on Friday 16th October, 7, for 7.30pm, upstairs at The Queen’s Head Pub in Titchfield, £1 entry. The subject of the debate is: “The UK should take more military action against ISIL in Syria”. I’m particularly interested in finding out what young people think about this issue in light of my recent visit to the British Army Training Unit in Suffield (BATUS), Canada, where I met many British troops in training for battle. It was an eye-opening experience and especially significant in light of the likely debate and vote on whether the UK should launch airstrikes on Syria.
