I am a keen champion of apprenticeships in Fareham and want to ensure that local people benefit from the increasing number of quality apprenticeships on offer as the Government heads toward its target of three million apprenticeship starts by 2020.
So I was delighted to get the support of many local businesses, charities and schools to take on apprentices for the first time, or to grow their existing apprenticeship programmes. The Government delivered more than 2.3million apprenticeships starts during the last Parliament, which is a record to be proud of. But for every single one of those apprenticeship starts, there was a person gaining new skills, and hands on experience, giving them a brighter future. This is why it is so important to ensure that Fareham is a key part of the drive toward the three million, ensuring that even more opportunities are created.
I absolutely believe that apprenticeships offer a brilliant opportunity for local businesses to help develop the careers of talented young people here in Fareham and ensuring the workforce of the future has the skills it needs. Local companies such as NATS, Parcar, Yo Telecom, Babcock International, Lloyds and MB Air Systems with the Royal Navy, Royal Marines all offer opportunities and I was pleased to work with them on this event.
I want local young people to be the rising stars of the future, and local employers to help grow that talent. There are lots of opportunities out there, and it was great to be able to help bring together those interested in pursuing a new career with the employers and training providers who match their interest. I’d like to thank Fareham College for hosting the event, and the companies who sponsored us, including ParCar and NATS, as well as all the people who visited during the day. The event was a great success, and I hope to be able to repeat it in future years.
