Last Friday, as part of her monthly surgery, local MP Suella Braverman met with ‘Time is Now’ campaigners at Whitely Community Centre.
The meeting provided an opportunity for residents to outline their opinions on climate change, biodiversity loss and the most effective method for reversing current trends.
By pledging to achieve net zero by 2050, the UK is the first county to legislate the elimination of its contribution to climate change. The UK is also the fastest in the G20 to cut emissions, and it is hoped this will inspire other nations to follow suit. Meanwhile, the Environment Bill is being introduced to protect and improve the environment for future generations, enshrining in law environmental principles and legally-binding targets.
However, the Government remains acutely aware that as the country emerges from the coronavirus pandemic, there is a seminal opportunity to deliver an economy which is stronger, greener and more sustainable. Accordingly, a Green Recovery working group has been established – one of five new ‘recovery roundtables’ – bringing together businesses, business representative groups and leading academics, to unleash Britain’s growth potential and help the economy recover from the pandemic.
