On Friday 28th January Suella joined Councillor Sarah Pankhurst to visit students at Barton Peveril College. Suella and Sarah engaged in conversations with pupils to discuss how the pandemic had affected their GCSE’s, how they have found the move up to college, and what their plans are for the future.
Despite the disruption Covid has caused to their education, Barton Peveril pupils all displayed a strong level of ambition and resilience. Suella was encouraged by Principal Johnathon Prest’s inspiring leadership that has led many of his students pursing further education at top universities. Suella was excited to learn that some of the students had already secured a place at their first choice of university.
Barton Peveril College has recently received a £4 million grant from the Department for Education’s Post-16 Capacity Fund which will go towards a brand-new Business School. The new building will house 28 new classrooms, study areas and nearly 3000 m² of additional space. Suella welcomed that the building will also be fitted with ground source heating and cooling, and photovoltaic panels on the roof. Having seen the ambitious drive of students at Barton Peveril, Suella believes that this £4 million grant will be put to good use and will provide great opportunities for future students looking to take their next steps into higher education.

I was especially pleased to hear how students have been achieving high standards, despite the Pandemic. As a Governor of the College I am looking forward to seeing completion of the Business School development which will enable the Business Students to return on site for their studies. I want to thank Principle Jonathan Prest for his dedication and hard work to the College and Suella for her time."
