On Friday 22nd July, over 100 local residents from Fareham and Gosport attended a meeting at St Philip Howard Church to discuss the impact of the housing development proposal on the area of land south of Longfield Avenue. The meeting was organised by Suella Braverman and Dame Caroline Dinenage, Member of Parliament for Gosport.
Having made her objections clear in a letter to Fareham Borough Council’s Planning Officer, Mark Wyatt, Suella was eager to speak with her constituents in person to further understand their feelings and views on this proposal.
During the event, Suella made it clear that this important area of countryside acts as a practical, visible and physical juncture between Fareham and Stubbington. Building 1,200 homes on the land south of Longfield Avenue will place an unsustainable amount of pressure on the local area. Caroline Dinenage raised similar concerns and displayed an equal level of unity with her constituents present at the event. After guests heard from Suella and Caroline, members present took turns to share their views on the proposal.
Fareham Borough Council’s (FBC) housing proposal has caused widespread concern and objection from local residents. Over 500 people have aired their views officially on FBC’s application summary webpage and a substantial number of constituents have written to Suella personally to convey their discontent. The level of objection was overwhelmingly confirmed by the evident level of animosity towards this proposal present during Suella’s sold-out event.
Suella assured guests that she understands their concerns. Agreeing that this proposal will be harmful to the local community, Suella will continue to stand up for her constituents on this important local issue.
Commenting, Suella said:
“I’m very grateful to everyone who turned up to this sold-out meeting and my thanks to Dame Caroline Dinenage for co-hosting with me. Having received and read many emails from constituents, speaking at length with members of the local community and engaging with members of the Council, I have concluded that I cannot support this proposal. This development will have an adverse effect on the Strategic Gap, valuable countryside, transport and local services."
"In advance of this application being considered by Fareham Borough Council, it is vital that we make our objections heard. I am confident that this event has sent a strong message to the Council. Thank you to everyone who attended and spoke at my event. I stand with you and will continue to make my objections clear.”
